Well put Dadburn. It's not unheard of for well meaning relatives to buy a pet from a pet shop - the vast majority of pet shops are supplied by puppy mills - and give it to an elderly parent for company. What often happens is the pet - through no fault of its own - has behavioural problems because of the production line environment of puppy mills and ends up needing the kind of training and attention that a frail older person can't provide.
We recommend adopting an older pet from a shelter. Older petsare more settled, often housetrained and are apst the shoe chewing stage. Shelters do very thorough assessments before they match and the responsible ones have a policy of taking the pet back if it doesn't work out. Animal Aid in Coldstream (Victoria) has done wonderful work in providing a back up program for adopted dogs AND their people - they train both to solve problems and have a great success rate.

It's the dark side of consumerism. You can buy anything, no questions asked, including living thigns who'll need you for the next 10 to 15 years adn then just discard them when the novlety wears off or the need to change your life to accomodate a dependent becomes an inconvenience. The Oscars Law people are doing a great service to the community by working to end puppy and kitten mills. We'll never be able to claim we're truly human until these horrors are stopped.
As for shelter pets being inferior - the fact is, puppy and kitten mill animals have been so deprived of normal stimulants that they often have behavioural problems for life.
